I AM HUTTERITE by Mary-Ann Kirkby
A fascinating account of and by one who lived in, then left the Hutterite community. So this is an insider’s story of what life in such an intentional community is like. Not only is it about life within but also the challenges of leaving and learning to live in the “English” community. She writes candidly about the difficulties she and her family experienced, while at the same time includes many positive comments about Hutterite lifestyle.
I note that the author chose to put the title in present tense indicating her years inside the Hutterite community still effect her life and thinking now on the outside.
There is humor and tragedy in this story. I found the everyday details about life inside and outside the Hutterite community very interesting. The storyline kept me intrigued and wanting to keep reading right to the very end.
